I understand that negative gearing was removed for roughly a 2 year period back in the 1980s, by Paul Keating when Treasurer. In fact, I understand it wasn’t removed, just modified so that income against which expenses could be offset was ringfenced to just the income from the geared asset. Of course with the BOJ heavily into asset purchases bond rates potentially don't reflect the true reality, but no doubt the market would be edgy about the continued central bank asset purchases and the governments inability to get their budget under control which is why the AUD/YEN movements of late look really interesting...
