    Doug Webber says that if mum or dad whold the investment as trustee for the child, then they are the legal owner of the investment and liable for tax on it.

    This ATO page suggests otherwise. Children's share investments This page says that regardless of whose name the investment is in, if all the dividends and the shares themselves are held for the child, then the child is the owner for tax purposes.
