Can I challenge a 20 percent rent rise?

    Can I challenge a 20 per cent rise?
    IMO its not unreasonale to put up the rent by 20% in 1 go.
    Often the determining factor is what other people are paying for comparable properties in the area.

    Yes, although the response from the tribunal will tend to vary by state ... in my experience, they will look at comparable rents for the area and if the new rent is inline with everything else, then they will support the rent rise. That being said, 20% in one hit is a big jump and I think it is reasonable to request a series of smaller increases instead.
