Who out there has had success advertising their business using GoogleAds? Would be very interested to hear your experiences- good, bad or otherwise.

    Google Ads

    Hi Jacque

My company is involved mainly in online marketing (usually for tourism businesses, about the only niche more competitive than real estate :) )

Google AdWords still aren't bad value if managed properly - as long as you read inside out the concept of bid optimisation and understand intimately how to maximise your CTR (click through ratio).

Avoid using the "Content Network" and use only the "Search network".

And while you're working online :) - good idea to make sure your site is search engine friendly, try to be adding 5 pages or so of content every week, and generate some good links from already-well-ranked websites. This way you'll likely gain in the 'organic' (ie. free) results.

One thing about AdWords is the stats are fantastic ... and if you trial a few small campaigns you can learn a lot very cheaply.

In fact only a month or so ago I suggested to Steve that NI consider using AdWords to advertise NavraInvest :) - its good value compared to most traditional advertising options, in almost all industries, particularly those that haven't yet got really competitive (real estate and travel are two are are very competitive, but financial services etc are still a bit immature in comparison)

Happy to answer any questions if our guys have experience in the area involved ...

    Cheers
    Carl

    AdWords manuals

    Sorry Jacque ...

I should have mentioned there are a few resonable free resources out there to learn more about the AdWords process :
http://www.google.com/ads/library/maximimum_effect_dec03.pdf (this is a little known one written by Google themselves and is a good primer)
    https://adwords.google.com/select/library/
    http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=1591
    http://www.akamarketing.com/google-adwords-guide.html

Good find of Nigel's with that SMH article ! Personally I think its a bit light on fact and high on drama (but thats the media for ya :) ) - I wonder how many businesses would be 'bankrupted' by a competitor falsely clicking on their online ad campaign ? - Google has anti-fraud procedures (see http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6114&query=click+fraud&topic=0&type=f ) ... as the article alludes its probably not in Google's interests to worry TOO much about that ... but its a multi-multi million dollar business and I think Google is smart enough to know to prove it protects its advertisers with the technology - otherwise people would desert one of its main revenue streams ... I've seen no evidence of any major 'click fraud' in the last couple of years and we've probably bought $30K USD of ads for our client base. Having said that there's bound to be some wastage, from tyre kickers and single-visit competitors, much like some punters throw expensive real estate brochures in the bin as soon as they leave the office :)

Have fun with or without AdWords ;-)

    Cheers
    Carl
