    dkmc or others,

Are you using wraps to invest in index funds for your superannuation??

    Thanks.

Just another thought, I wonder if there will ever be enough interest on index funds in this forum to split the managed funds section to active funds and index funds...!

I'm always willing to look at suggestions like this.

How about we start with a "LMI" section ... Listed Managed Investments, which would include LICs, ETFs and other such vehicles ... I think LPTs also fall under that classification right ?

I think that would be a good idea. Lpt do at times fall into the lic while others do direct invest.

I was also considering suggesting that there may be a call for a `defensive' forum. The theme being a discussion of protective techniques. Sim, I am not certain whether it would be better to have one main forum or sub-forums in MF and share forums.

    Tailcat.

P.S. Sim, I could not post under your announcement of the above forums. The system said I didn't have sufficient privileges.

Part of the reason I brought this up is that I've been reading this forum here:

    aus.invest - Aussie Phorums

Yes, I know, it looks like rubbish!

But, do a search for 'index funds' and you find a few gem threads here with Travis Morien and a few others going at it on this very interesting topic.

I don't think there's sufficient interest in the index fund approach as yet to justify it's own sub-forum here at present, but I could be wrong.

Having an LMI section seems OK though.

Although, Sim, I don't think index funds are actually 'listed investments' as such, are they??

I havent used indexes for super yet

    Sim
Great to see this new LMI forum
tho index funds technically dont fit under LMI

LICs and LPT are not passive investments

The big philosophical difference is active managed funds and passive managed funds
LICs sit in between. ETFs are passive, LPT are mostly active

Not sure if I can think of a better classification
As long as you highlight where index investing should go into - managed funds, or LMI's

Most discussions have had LMI's and indexes together - so it would make sense to lump them in the same forum
maybe a better title should be Passive and LMI investments

This has been an interesting thread. I have a FA who is big into DFA, but seems to be charging quite a bit more than your 1% - think you probably have a good deal here. My FA seems to be between 2-3% in total. Dallee

    Maybe:

    1. Active Funds - All your usual chasing alpha funds
    2. Passive Funds - Index Funds/ETF's
    3. Listed Managed Investments - LIC's, LPT's

    OR

    1. Active Funds and LMI's
    2. Passive Funds

There is no dedicated forum in Australia that discusses the passive investing approach with index funds/ETF's, so perhaps Invested could be the leader here and create one...and then maybe some of the smart chaps on aus.invest can come over here instead and share their knowledge!

In the US, there are dozens of forums that solely discuss the index fund/ETF approach, so we are a bit slow to catch on here in Aus...

Thanks for a great post! It's an issue I've been reflecting on for a while. Still to reach a conclusion!

    Cheers

At the moment I've been focussing the forum topics on the product side of things ... so if you want to talk about an Index Fund, you would post in managed funds ... while if you want to post about an Index tracking ETF, you would post in the new LMI forum. If you want to discuss both, you could post in either forum.

If you want to post about Index investing as a strategy, you could post in the investment strategies forum.

I'd be happy to consider "Active Investing" and "Passive Investing" or other strategies as sub-topics of Investment Strategies.

Sorry, just had a look at the Eureka website and couldn't find it. I'm not a subscriber, but it was one of their regular free articles at the time I saw it.

    STW pays biannually
    SLF pays quarterly
Some great yields at the moment
    5.8% for STW
    8.6% for SLF - property

nb comsec is better for research than etrade in etf's - etrade has no data
