    But its written by a Melbournian in Bernard Salt who agreed today it was based on dodgy extrapolations of current migration trends over recent history. The ABS laughed it off as a bit of media spin and Bernard agreed with them. His final comment from today's AFR page 11 was: "It might be a bold call, but it has foccussed attention on the issue".

    It presumes Melbourne sustains its recent net growth of 62,000 per annum and Sydney stays stagnant at 37,000 per annum for the next 20 years. The senior ABS demographers laughed this assumption off as a bit of light-hearted spin.
