I found this article recently whilst cruising Terry Ryder's site:

Morgan poll ranks agents second bottom
Only 10% of Australian consumers believe agents have high standards of ethics and honesty.

Real estate agents rank almost rock bottom in the minds of Australians, according to the latest poll on ethics and honesty by the Roy Morgan group.

Car sales people are the only citizens to rank lower than agents in the latest Morgan Poll.

Only 10% of Australian consumers believe agents have high standards of ethics and honesty. This is a fall from last year's 11% approval rating.

Since 1983, when the Morgan Poll first included agents in the survey, they have not risen above an 11 percent honesty rating. Agents' lowest ranking was 8% in both 2000 and 2001.

But this is higher than some national surveys which have given agents ratings as low as 2%.

This poll was actually conducted at the end of 2004 but I guess it would be interesting to see if opinions have changed much. Looks like standards still need to be improved before the public's general views are lifted.
