New Forum Rules

    To bring InvestChat in to line with our other sites, PropertyChat and BusinessChat, we have published a new set of rules which we expect our members to follow when posting on this site: Forum Rules.

    These rules are based on a similar set which have successfully been in use on PropertyChat for well over a year now and are based on nearly 15 years worth of experience in operating the Somersoft forums. We are confident that our members will find them fair and reasonable - although we always happy to discuss ways in which things can be improved.

    Also review a brief summary of our Moderation Policy.

    We will be spending some time in coming weeks and months to clean up some of the existing content which has strayed too far over what we consider reasonable. Where it makes sense to do so, we will alert the users affected by the changes, often with an explanation as to why we took the action we did for education purposes.

    Given the rules on InvestEd were never explicitly documented in this form, some of the rules may seem new. It's actually more a matter that they were never actively enforced (our fault), and so with the launch of the new site, we are taking the opportunity to be a lot more transparent about our expectations moving forward. We hope our members will appreciate the clarity - especially with more consistent enforcement which we regret has been lacking.

    Some key points which may be new to members of InvestEd/InvestChat (summary only - please refer to the forum rules page for complete details):
    • No soliciting funds or investors (rule #14) - you are not permitted to ask for people to invest in your product or investment schemes.
    • No self promotion or advertising (rule #18) - you are not permitted to advertise your own business in forum posts or any other part of the site. We will be introducing a business membership option which will provide targeted opportunities for businesses to promote their products or services to our members and viewers - but these rules will still apply to business members.
    • No soliciting business (rule #19) - you are not permitted to suggest that members contact you or visit your website (or any other content about your business you have published online). The forum is here for people to learn from - add value by educating people via the forums.
    • No linking to your own website (rule #20). You may refer to the fact that content on your site exists, but you can't link directly to it
    • No commercial usernames or avatars (rule #21). Business members will be allowed commercial usernames or avatars.
    • If posting a meetup, seminar or event - please pay careful attention to rule #25, which describes what our expectations are and what is permitted.
    Specific to the financial planning study group forum - we will no longer tolerate the solicitation of sharing of assignments. We are more than willing to help you with your studies where possible, but we believe that our next generation of financial planners will be much better served actually learning how to be a planner by completing the assignments yourself rather than simply copying someone else's work. As such, we will shortly be cleaning up this part of the site and will remove any new posts made which are about assignment sharing rather than actually trying to learn. We want you to share your knowledge for the purposes of learning and improving.
