An airconditioning system where the compressor and fan motor are located separately from the internal unit which disperses the cold or hot air. The two parts of a split system are connected by ducting and may be 5m+ apart. The external component is usually mounted outside the property either on a wall, balcony or on a small concrete footing for a detached house.

Split systems are typically much quieter than all in one "through the wall" units because the noisy section is located outside the house.
