Well put Sim. And I would say most people would not be educated enough to be able to switch out and back in in a timely manner, so its best people just leave their money put.

Since I started tracking my super in May last year, its now down 37%.

What are the chances that the volatility on the downside will be complimented by volatility on the upside?

(cfs prop down 115%, cfs geared down 76%, plat asia only down 9%)

Isn't that exactly what we saw over the past 3 - 5 years? We had a strongly rising market. These markets will rise again eventually ... it's just a matter of when and whether you are prepared to hold on until they do.

Far out and the media is reporting that super funds on average only lost 6.5%

    Hi Voigtstr,

I would have thought once your CFS Property fund had dropped 100% of its value you would be at zero value.

    Cheers,

    Dan

Perhaps someone can point out if I'm doing something wrong with the math.

We have two numbers A (our starting point) and B (what the number has changed to overtime)

    I was doing (B-A)/B*100

I can now see that it should be (B-A)/A*100

So the cfs property fund is now down approx 51% since entry. Thanks for the tip :)

thanks for pointing it out... in hindsite something dropping more than 100% should have raised a red flag :).

My super is down 25.39% since May last year.

Good, I don't feel so bad now, mine is down 24%. I only have 10 years left before retirement, so I hope it picks up by then.
It is amazing though, since 2002 when I put money into top up super it has only gone averaged about 3% per year.

I am surprised it dropped by this much.
Which super company are you with and what plan were you on?
I am with Australian Super and only their 100% share funds lost over 10%

    Cheers

Got out of the balanced plans because they werent aggresive enough and I have 25 years until retirement.

The funds that the super invests in are:

Colonial First State Geared Share Fund
Colonial First State Ws Prop Sec Fund
    GMO Australian Small Companies Trust
    Platinum Asia Fund

I'll see where it is in 10 years. As a hobby (and to have a reasonable feel for what the markets are doing) I'm grabbing the unit prices daily and adding them to a spreadsheet.

An update from my spreadsheet. For today (which is a lag of two days as far as I can tell) I'm down 20.9%, on 7/8/08 I was down 25.09% Platnum Asia is almost back to 0%

That's great, but is it a true recovery?
does our $ value have something to do with it?

our dollar is weaker against the US dollar, and thats it.. so it shouldn't affect Asian/european investments. Correct me if I'm wrong?
