Looks like the employment figures for December were pretty ugly as well! US manufacturing shed 220,000 jobs alone!

Sydney CBD in December was so gloomy you couldn’t say is Xmas coming. Many people lost their jobs but not many will make in to statistics. Contractors are not on official unemployment list as they are disposable work force and assumed smart enough to get around at all the times.

My father sacked all his contractors in Nov/Dec of last year - he is starting on the perminents in Jan/Feb this year. I imagine a lot of small to medium businesses were in a similar position late last year, which would imply that the figures will start to look ugly from here on out.
